Before you have chosen a single thing, the occasion has already made most of your decisions. It sets the budget: a wedding and a colleague’s birthday come with different numbers attached, and everyone in the room knows them. It sets the deadline: a matric dance does not move, Mother’s Day deliveries mostly happen the Friday before, and a funeral can be four days away. It sets the formality: what works at a 21st would be unthinkable at a memorial. And it sets the risk: get a Secret Santa slightly wrong and nobody remembers by lunch; get a sympathy gesture wrong and someone remembers for years.
That is why we organise these guides by occasion first. Reading the occasion correctly does more for a gift than any amount of shopping flair. A rough map of the risk involved: sympathy and funerals demand the most care and the least flash. Weddings and milestones carry firm expectations but forgive small errors. And the calendar occasions, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, add a logistics problem on top: everyone else is buying at the same time, so the real deadline belongs to the courier, not the calendar.
