Start from the constraint, not the gift
Once a date or a distance is involved, delivery stops being a detail at the end of gifting and starts deciding what you can give at all. We sort the problem into five real constraints.
Needs to arrive today. Possible in the big metros, and decided entirely by the merchant’s cut-off time, which sits earlier than you expect, often in the morning. This is a race you win before lunch or not at all.
Needs to arrive by a date. The comfortable version of the problem, wasted when you treat the date as the deadline. The real deadline is the courier’s: work backwards from the date, add margin for weekends, public holidays and December, and order into that.
Going far away. Nationwide is not the same as everywhere. Small towns and rural addresses mean regional couriers, outlying-area surcharges, extra days, and a gift that must survive heat and handling. The gift itself has to change: nothing chilled, nothing fragile, nothing urgent.
Going to an office. Office parks add security gates, reception desks and closing times, and from mid-December, closed doors. A named recipient, a phone number for the driver, and confirmation that the person is in that week.
No address at all. More common than anyone admits: the old friend, the client you know only by email. Digital gifts need nothing but a phone number or an email address. Delivery to a workplace routes around a missing home address. And simply asking, or asking a mutual friend, ruins a surprise far less than a parcel that never arrives.
One rule spans all five. The merchant’s own stated cut-off, coverage and terms decide everything, and they change. Final price, availability, delivery and returns always sit with the merchant. Check the specific suburb at the specific checkout, every time, and delivery becomes the boring part of gifting, which is exactly what it should be.
