Editorial policy
How guides on this site get written, what we refuse to do, and how to tell us we have got something wrong.
Gift content on the internet has a bad reputation, and it has earned most of it. Endless lists of products nobody has seen, invented star ratings, fake urgency, and prices that were wrong the day they were published. This page sets out how we work instead, so you can judge us against it.
What we publish
We publish guidance about deciding: what an occasion actually calls for, what is normal to spend in rand, how South African delivery really behaves, and how to avoid the mistakes that make a gift land badly. The subject of a guide is the decision, not a product.
That is deliberate. Prices and stock change weekly. A shop that was reliable in March may not be in December. Judgement about how to choose lasts a great deal longer, and it is the part most gift content skips.
What we will not do
- We will not say we tested, bought or used something when we did not.
- We will not invent statistics, survey results, ratings, reviews, testimonials or customer numbers. If we cannot support a number, we do not print a number.
- We will not copy a shop's product descriptions and present them as our own writing.
- We will not publish a page just to have a page. No thin location, occasion or recipient pages generated in bulk.
- We will not sell placement, sponsored posts or reviews, and nothing appears here because a brand paid for it.
- We will not promise a delivery outcome. We explain how delivery generally works and tell you to check the shop's own terms.
How money fits in
Some links may be affiliate links, which means a shop may pay us a commission if you buy after following one, at no extra cost to you. That is set out in full in our affiliate disclosure. It has no bearing on what we write or the order in which things appear. If commission ever conflicted with honest guidance, the guidance wins, because a site that stops being worth reading stops being worth anything.
Who writes it
Adam Sacharowitz is responsible for what appears on this site. The site is published by ZAIQ in Johannesburg. There is a real person at hello@zaiq.ai and a reply comes from a person.
Corrections
We will get things wrong. When we do, we want to know. Email hello@zaiq.ai with the page and what is wrong with it. If you are right, we fix the page and update the date on it. We do not quietly delete pages to make a mistake disappear.
How we handle sensitive subjects
Some gifting happens around funerals, illness and religious or cultural occasions. On those subjects we write plainly and carefully, we keep guidance general rather than speaking for any community, and we would rather say less than say something presumptuous. If we have described something about your community badly, please tell us and we will correct it.
Updates
Every guide carries the date it was last updated. Guidance that depends on the calendar, such as the December period, gets reviewed each year.
